Domain Name is an unique Alphabetical or Alphanumerical Internet address. It is an alternate for a numerical number for easy remembrance by the users. A Domain Name communicates a series of numbers called Internet Protocol (IP) numbers which is substituting as a routing address on Internet. A typical example of a domain name is www.annasilicon.com. To locate other computers on internet IP addresses are being used, which is really very hard to remember these type of numeric addresses as it is a series of numbers seperated by dots.
To ease this process Domain name System (DNS) was formed to translate a numeric address called IP into words like Names and Phrases. Domain names consist of two parts separated by a dot. The left side part is specific and named as Second Level Domain, where as the right side part is general one and named as Top Level Domain and normally its is called as Domain Extension.
Top Level Domain - There are 3 types of Top Level Domains.
- GTLD – Generic Top Level Domain – Every one is authorized to register. Examples are .Com, .Net, .Org.
- RTLD – Restricted Top Level Domain - Need Some Criteria to register. Some of Examples are .Biz, .TV.
- CCTLD – Country Code Top Level Domain – These Domains allotted to Specific Countries like .IN, .US
Second Level Domain is a Name or a Phrase what you register as your Internet Address along with the Top Level Domain. In a domain www.annasilicon.in , .in is a Country Code Top Level Domain and annasilicon is a Second Level Domain a name represents the company.
